After growing up in Wales and South Africa, and working as an Industrial Chemist in the Steel Industry, I joined Financial Services in 1982. I have held a few roles since then, as an Adviser, Manager, Trainer, Financial Planner and as a Business and Technical Consultant to other Advisers.
Since the end of 2015, I have been pretty much full time occupied at Perceptive Planning (www.perceptiveplanning.co.uk) where I have a mainly operational role. I support the Client Services team, which is headed by Shannon Currie. I am the firms Pension Specialist, often looking at occupational pension scheme transfers and valuations. I have been a qualified specialist in this field since 1996.
I enjoy helping other Financial Advisers cope with regulatory change, and have been lucky enough to have spoken at conferences and worked with Advisers, Planners and Regulators in the UK, USA, Ireland, Australia, France, Gibraltar, Portugal, Hungary, Bulgaria, Monaco, Canada and South Africa
Qualifications and Accreditations
I am an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII), a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society, a Certified Financial Planner (CFPtm), a Chartered Wealth Manager and a Chartered Financial Planner.
I believe in ‘giving something back’, and being part of the increased professionalism of our industry. I am a past Director of both the Institute of Financial Planning (IFP) and the Society of Financial Advisers (SOFA), and a past member of the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) Regulatory Advisory Panel.
I have been an expert witness since 2006, and have contributed to cases in both the English and Scottish High Courts.
I am a frequent contributor to the professional press, and Professional Adviser Magazine listed me amongst the ‘Top 50 Influential Advisers’ in 2005 and 2011
Outside of work
My hobbies are walking a large black dog called Ebony, red wine, travel and Welsh Rugby.
With Shannon Currie, I was part of the 4 person team that holds the world record for visiting the most countries by land in 24 hours. This achievement – 18 countries in 24 hours – was held in June 2014 and raised money for local charities.
